Staying trim is an uphill task during the holidays. This article is a roundup of the best advice to enable you stay trim and enjoy the holidays.
Well, the holidays have come upon us once again. The truth is we all tend to eat a little more than we need during the holiday season. The pressure is off for a little while, the happy hormones kick in, and there is ‘good’ food everywhere you turn. The temptations are too delicious to ignore. So how do we get to stay trim and enjoy the holidays?
1. Prioritize and reward yourself
If you have worked hard to keep off the kilos then you have to make staying trim one of your priorities. Spend time with your family, relish their company but remember to find some time to exercise. Reward yourself with a slice of dessert and have one cheat day where you can indulge in sweetness but please do not overdo it. Remember, it is easy to put on weight but twice as hard to shed it off. 2. Walk to stay trim
You have spent too much time sitting behind a desk all year round. Try not to spend too much time watching T.V. or movies. Instead, plan for fun activities that involve walking and breaking a little sweat. You can walk around the heavenly beach where you are vacationing, walk to your favorite park or garden, walk to your favorite restaurant if it is within walking distance, the list is endless. 3. Involve family and friends
It is almost impossible to work out during the holidays when all you feel like doing is grinding to a halt and just relaxing. Incorporating a family member or a friend will give you the much-needed motivation you require to stay on course. You will enjoy the company of your child, spouse or friend and keep off the ‘happy’ weight as well. For more tips on how to keep off weight and enjoy the holidays see Good Mama.
4. Wear fitting clothes to stay trim
Why? You wonder? It will make you uncomfortable when you overindulge. Ditch your baggy clothes for when you want to snuggle up to watch your favorite movie on the couch. For more out of the box, tips visit My Mommy Style.
5. Do everything in moderation
This is a season to be merry so do not be a kill, Joy. Do not turn down all invitations to parties; accept a few and when you go eat and drink in moderation. The holidays are about connecting with people and not connecting with food. You get to eat every day but you do not get to see everyone every day. For more tips go to Levo.
6. Fill on veggies first
Eat your vegetables first, if there should be room left then eat the other delicacies. This will ensure you do not pass up on your much-needed nutrition for empty calories.
7. Dance away and stay trim
What better way to lose some weight and stress than dancing it away? Compile a list of songs you and your family can dance to this holiday season and have fun while you stay in shape. For more interesting tips read The Note Passer.
8. Have adequate sleep
You have worked hard all year round; you deserve time to sleep the recommended 8 hours. Research has shown that adequate sleep helps in keeping off weight. Experts agree that getting enough shut-eye is as important to health, well-being, and your weight as are diet and exercise. Do not party all season; take some time off during this holiday to sleep to stay trim. If you want to know more about the relationship between sleep and weight visit WebMD.
9. Drink more water
Water is not only good for hydration; it also helps in digestion and bowel movement. Water is also nutritious; I can see you rolling your eyes (wink, wink). Yes, water is nutritious; water contains vital minerals important for our health such calcium, magnesium, and potassium.
Recently, I have taken to the habit of drinking water before I go to bed and in the morning before I take a shower. I read somewhere that it prevents strokes and lowers high blood pressure. The secret is in the potassium and magnesium present in water. You can read more here on the relationship between calcium, magnesium and blood pressure.
In addition to keeping you hydrated, drinking lots of water during the holidays will keep you satiated; as a result, you will eat less and stay trim.
10.Eat tummy tightening foods
Eat at least one tummy tightening food every day; these foods not only provide you with nutrition but also help you in your quest to lose weight. I have tried a few myself and they work. My favorites are apples, grapes, peanuts, lemon, turmeric, and avocado.
Other foods you can try include almonds, grapefruit, hard-boiled egg (do not eat every day as it will increase your bad cholesterol levels), green tea, watermelon, celery, black beans, pears, pineapples, beetroots, sweet potatoes, Greek yogurt, butternut, dark chocolate, and red pepper.
